Millennials: What They Bring to the Packaging Industry

Given that Millennials currently make up the largest percent of the workforce at 32% (followed by Gen X’s at 31.2% and Baby Boomers at 30.6%) it’s important to understand what they bring to the table, how to get them there and more importantly how to keep them. Most importantly, understand what Millenials bring to the packaging industry.

Millennials are coming into the workforce with higher education levels than past generations – that elevated education level allows employees to think more critically and brainstorm ways to potentially improve current processes to increase productivity.  These employees value furthering themselves, 72% of the generation value learning new skills and staying up-to-date on trends and being innovative.  This also allows them to be quick learners and trainable, which is key in the packaging industry. In short, Millennials bring value to the packaging industry.

Now that you know why you need these employees, here are the top three ways to keep them.

1.     Monitoring, but not really:  Traditional monitoring with the Millennials won’t be as affective.  Engage with Millennials and find out what’s working for them and what’s not.  Do it informally: coffee chats, round table lunches, small group sessions.

2.     Feedback:  Millennials like to have reassurance that what they’re contributing is what is needed.  Schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings just to keep them involved and motivated.

3.     Value: This generation thrives on value, knowing that they are working towards a goal and their contributions are helping to get there.  Beyond that, they care about fulfilling their own personal goals.  Get to know your employees and make sure that they are taking all the opportunities they can to further themselves professionally. Let Millennials know directly what value they bring to the packaging industry.

As much as this generation has already taken over the workforce, it’ll only continue to grow.  Prepare for it.  Embrace it.  Millennuals will bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the packaging industry and will continue to further innovation.
