The future has been painted by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce: 5 million U.S. jobs will be unfilled in 2020. One industry that seems to have the greatest chance to be affected is the supply chain; the supply chain is certainly not a new industry but with the expanding industry it is becoming a far more multifaceted ordeal that requires individuals who have crucial skills. Private sectors have taken notice of this impending skills gap and some steps have been taken to minimize the effects, which include adding supply chain degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. These programs have been identified by many organizations to not fully equip graduates with the necessary skills to meet their requirements when bringing in new talent. There are a few key things that companies can do to reduce this gap on their bottom line:
- Recognize the problem
- Implement internal training for existing employees as well as new employees to train on emerging techniques and processes
- Partner with universities that offer these programs to potentially offer internships that allow them to gain real-world experience and help mold potential employees
- A well organized talent management Play Store App strategy that recognizes and evaluates gaps.
Even currently, organizations have recognized that recent graduates are not entering the field with all the necessary skills for supply chain and this lack of skills is only going to widen within the next few years. Recognizing and addressing this issue now will help companies alleviate future implications of the broadening skills gap.
